The Thai women’s water polo team achieved a historic bronze medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, marking a first for Thai water polo at the prestigious event. Coached by Maxim Kordonsky, the team sought blessings for morale and confidence prior to their departure for the Games, visiting Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) and Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn).

A behind-the-scenes clip of their pre-competition rituals was shared on social media by Kordonsky, showcasing his participation in traditional Thai ceremonies, including receiving blessings from a monk. He detailed a thread-tying ritual performed on his wrist, explaining, “The monk tied three threads around my wrist—red, blue, and white—each with five beads. This is a traditional Thai ritual to seek blessings, protection, and good fortune.”
This gesture underscores the coach’s embrace of Thai culture, illustrating how, in addition to tactical preparation and physical training, morale and faith were considered crucial elements in bolstering the team’s confidence before they competed. The Thai women’s team’s exceptional performance culminated in securing the bronze medal, thereby writing a new and significant chapter in the history of Thai water polo.
