Sixties Town: A Slice of the Wild West on the Edge of Hua Hin

Some restaurants give you a meal. Sixties Town gives you a short holiday. As night falls, strings of lights come on over a chalet-style building, rows of wooden tables fill the open-air yard and, for a few hours, you could be anywhere but Hua Hin. The whole place is built as a very well-crafted, very country-style, very cowboy-style town, and the effect is surprisingly convincing.

It is worth the trip. As we sat down, we realised the feeling of being away on holiday is a big part of the pleasure, even if you live next door.

Nine years of practice

Sixties Town has been operating for nearly nine years, and it has used that time well. You can taste it in the delivery of the dishes and the confidence of the kitchen. The menu is extensive, so everyone should be satisfied, because there really is something for everyone. The atmosphere wraps its arms around you and gives you a good long hug while you are there.

What we ate

Fried chicken. The presentation is quite nice and looks very appealing, with the spices clearly visible on the outside. Cut open, the chicken was very succulent, and the ranch sauce that came with it was a wonderful partner. It does carry some spice, but we would invite many people to try it, even those who are sensitive to heat. It stays well within the limits.

Double cheeseburger. A solid delivery. The meat patty was delicious, the portion of cheese dripped throughout, and the bun was lovely. As my dining partner put it, it is hard to complain.

Kor moo yang. A very special starter. It arrives sizzling hot, and then the hot sauce is poured over the top, which adds to the spectacle of the moment.

The big board. If you have a big appetite and don’t know what to order, this is the answer, and there is something on it for everyone. It starts with ribs that are tender enough to fall off the bone and sit on a bed of lovely roasted vegetables. Next comes a pair of sausages, then a pork steak with onions, a wedge of lemon and a pepper sauce. Grilled pineapple is a nice touch. Hamburger and breaded chicken round out the board.

French fries. Fries are fries, but these are in the top 20% of French fries we have eaten. Perfectly cooked, lovely and light, and very delicious.

The verdict

Bring your appetite, because the portions are big. Sixties Town is a loud, generous, good-natured place, and the food backs up the theatre. If you are looking for somewhere with a bit of fun, come with friends or family, order the big board and settle in.
