The Department of Airports (DOA) is preparing to open bids for Phase 1 of the Phrae Airport expansion by September of this year. The project, estimated to cost 400 million baht, includes the construction of a runway extension, the airport’s electrical system, and other essential components. The DOA is currently reviewing feedback from operators after the comment period for the draft bid concluded on August 26, 2026. The bidding process is expected to proceed as planned, assuming no significant issues arise from the feedback.

Phrae Airport currently lacks commercial flights because its runway is too short for medium-sized aircraft commonly used by domestic airlines. Additionally, the taxiway does not meet the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand’s (CAAT) standards, and the apron’s structural integrity is insufficient.
To support travel and tourism by increasing flight numbers and aircraft types, Phrae Province requires a runway expansion. Due to space limitations, the project will be implemented in two phases. Phase 1 will extend the current 30×1,500 meter runway to 45×1,900 meters, with Phase 2 extending it further to 45×2,100 meters.
The selection of a contractor is anticipated by the end of 2026, with Phase 1 construction slated to commence shortly thereafter. This phase is expected to take approximately 900 days, or about 2.5 years, with the entire project projected for completion and operational readiness by 2027. Construction will encompass runway strengthening and extension, the creation of safety areas at runway ends and the apron, upgrades to taxiways, apron reinforcement, and the installation of drainage systems, airport electrical systems, and equipment storage buildings.
In cases of contractor delays, and provided the DOA does not terminate the contract, a daily fine of 0.25% of the contract value will be imposed due to the impact on air traffic.
Phrae Airport is one of seven DOA-managed airports without current commercial operations, primarily serving private and occasional government aircraft. The runway extension is expected to significantly enhance the airport’s capacity, enabling it to accommodate a wider range of aircraft and thereby bolstering the province’s tourism sector by offering more travel alternatives.
