The Surat Thani province experienced a series of small earthquakes on Sunday and Monday, with no reports of damage or injury. Eight quakes were detected between 7am and 6pm on Sunday, ranging from 1.7 to 3.5 on the Richter scale. The strongest quake, measuring 3.5, was reported at a depth of one kilometer at 5:41pm on Sunday.
An additional four quakes were recorded between 1am and 5:30am on Monday, also within the 1.7 to 3.5 Richter scale range. The Earthquake Observation Division attributed the seismic activity to the movement along the Khlong Marui Fault Zone (KMFZ), one of Thailand’s major active strike-slip fault systems.
Local residents reported feeling the tremors, and some panicked, especially those living near the Rajjaprabha Dam or Cheow Lan Dam. Officials from the Earthquake Observation Division thoroughly inspected the dams and found no structural or functional impact. The division is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local agencies to assess any potential effects on residents.
Last month, the province recorded four small earthquakes in the same area, ranging from 1.9 to 2.9 on the Richter scale, also caused by the movement of the KMFZ.
