Prime Minister Anutin Cancels F-16 Flight Over Health Issues

By Editorial Staff · 12 August 2026

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has confirmed that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul will not pilot an F-16 fighter jet during his upcoming visit to Wing 1 in Nakhon Ratchasima on August 14, 2026. This decision is based on the Prime Minister’s current physical readiness and the requirement to fulfill all necessary aviation standards.

Flying a fighter jet demands strict adherence to comprehensive safety procedures and aviation standards, which include rigorous medical and fitness evaluations, altitude chamber training, and ejection seat instruction. These essential processes require a considerable amount of time to complete.

Considering the limited timeframe before the August 14 visit, the RTAF determined that these procedures could not be fully accomplished. Consequently, with safety as the paramount concern, the RTAF will ensure that all steps are followed in accordance with the same rigorous standards applied to its own pilots.

During his visit, Prime Minister Charnvirakul will receive a briefing on the RTAF’s current operations and missions, including an overview of the F-16 fighter jet’s capabilities and role. He will also engage with and offer encouragement to the pilots, officers, and personnel of Wing 1, providing an important opportunity to gain firsthand insight into their missions, readiness, and operational duties.

The RTAF reiterated that any future opportunity for the Prime Minister to fly an F-16, should it be deemed appropriate, would be undertaken with strict adherence to established safety standards and training protocols. The RTAF emphasized its commitment to not arranging special flights or adding flight hours for him, nor will any actions be taken that would unnecessarily increase the burden or budget of the government.

The RTAF believes that firsthand experience of operational duties is invaluable for policymakers and security decision-makers, enabling them to develop a thorough understanding of air power capabilities, limitations, and readiness. This understanding, in turn, facilitates more effective and situationally appropriate decision-making. The RTAF underscored its unwavering commitment to safety, professionalism, and international standards, ensuring all activities are conducted strictly under these principles.
