Nvidia has partnered with SPAN to introduce “Zephyr nodes,” a plan to deploy mini data centers at residential homes, revolutionizing the distribution of AI processing power into communities. Data centers have consistently faced challenges with power grid capacity and community opposition.
CNBC reports that Nvidia is collaborating with SPAN, a startup developing an intelligent electrical panel system called XFRA. This initiative proposes a paradigm shift by decentralizing miniature data centers to be installed at people’s homes.
This approach aims to address the critical issues of AI development clashing with urban planning and insufficient power. The development of advanced AI models requires immense processing power, prompting leading tech companies to accelerate the construction of large data centers. However, these efforts are hampered by two primary obstacles: the limitations of electrical transmission systems, where gathering vast amounts of power for a single large data center can take years to build new substations, and public resistance. Many local communities have voiced opposition to large data centers near residential areas due to noise, energy consumption, and environmental concerns. Consequently, data center projects in the United States valued at over $64 billion have been suspended or delayed in the past year.
Zephyr nodes are designed to repurpose surplus electricity from homes into supercomputers. To overcome these challenges, SPAN has launched “Zephyr nodes,” which incorporate supercomputing-level processing capabilities into a compact unit installed externally on a typical home, resembling an air conditioner or central air compressor unit. SPAN points out that community-level transformers typically have significant unused surplus power. The installation of Zephyr nodes leverages this excess electrical energy, transforming it into a distributed supercomputing system. This allows AI companies to rent processing power without the lengthy wait associated with building new data center facilities.
Despite their compact size, these units are equipped with top-tier hardware comparable to what technology companies use for training world-class AI models. Each Zephyr node contains 16 Nvidia RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell GPUs, four server-grade processors, and substantial memory, with the memory alone costing nearly $100,000. The total hardware value for the AI components installed at each home exceeds $250,000.
Designed for quiet operation and featuring a fanless liquid cooling system, Zephyr nodes prevent noise complaints and avoid expelling hot air. Homeowners also receive a comprehensive smart energy system, including an intelligent electrical panel, a 10-20 kWh backup battery, and in some cases, integration with rooftop solar panels. Homeowners incur no costs for the equipment or the electricity consumed by AI processing. This represents a significant step in shifting AI infrastructure from secure, enclosed buildings to community-level spaces and residential properties, enabling faster access to community-level networks.
