A dispute between Thai and Chinese construction workers escalated into a physical fight at a site in Map Kha, Nikhom Phatthana district, Rayong, leaving several people with minor injuries on April 26.
According to reports, the incident began as a verbal disagreement before turning violent. Video footage showed workers in safety gear clashing near a motorcycle parking area, while others attempted to break up the fight.
Local sources suggested the conflict may have stemmed from ongoing coordination issues between Thai and Chinese site supervisors, with differences in working methods causing repeated tensions prior to the incident.
Authorities, including police, district officials, and the Internal Security Operations Command, visited the site on April 27 to assess the situation. Workers and supervisors from both sides have been called in for questioning.
Initial findings indicate that multiple individuals were involved, and the case may be treated as assault and public disturbance.
The site operator has temporarily suspended construction work and separated Thai and Chinese workers to prevent further conflict. Interpreters are also being arranged to address language barriers, identified as a key factor in the dispute.
Officials are reviewing CCTV footage to identify additional participants and are working on preventive measures. Authorities warned that such incidents could impact foreign labour management and investor confidence in Rayong’s industrial sector.
